Hohner L90 Goldtop Copy

Don't be fooled by the Hohner badge, this is a lovely guitar, much better quality than the epiphone gold tops I have come across. I bought this new from Crane's when I first starting playing guitar for about £360. I believe it is one of the UK built models. Action and intonation is nice, neck is in good shape. I upgraded the bridge pick up to a Wilkinson P90. Will chuck in the orginal if you want it. Also have the scratch plate which I can fit, if thats your thing.

Price: £195 ONO

How do P90s sound in comparison to humbuckers? Never tried them.

I use an LP Goldtop copy made by Vintage (V100) it has a pair of Soapbar P90's and another V100 with a P90 in the neck position and they sound great. They fall somewhere in between standard single coils and humbuckers.

Of course, it depends on what guitar you've got them in but I would say they have a fatter tone then the normal single coil but more bite then a humbucker. To my ears they also sound more harmonically rich then other pickups.

Definitely have a love em' or hate em' thing going on as the tone is very distinctive, especially when played clean.

Hope that helps.

P90s are single coils so they are brighter than humbuckers. However, they are less twangy/snappy than your average Fender-type single coils. They sound quite detailed. Loads of harmonic. When driving a decent tube amp they have a biting, gritty sound with a good amount of midrange. They bark. They're my favourites. Of course there's P90s and then there's P90s. I have them in my Juniors and some are hotter than others. They're less forgiving than humbuckers and prone to hum but when you get a sweet one you really know about it.
