took the good lady wife out on sat night, went to a local club to see a covers band-Devious,who are from the rhondda somewhere. They were pretty entertaining to be fair, mostly rock 'classics'plus the usual killers/kings of leon type stuff, they put everything into it,got most of the crowd up and dancing, even my toes were tapping to a few of their tunes, fair play the 4 of us who went had a good drunken night out.I got chatting to the landlord who's an old friend of mine, told him he must have been pleased with the turn-out,good bar takings plus must have made a killing on the door,£5 each and over 200 there...fair play he was happy with everything, then told me the band were on a grand for the night !!!!...f##k me,all you people in bands out there, ditch your diy/metal/punk/hardcore bands, and get learning those stereophonics tunes, you know it makes sense.

Every band that does Stars should tour the valleys for a week afterwards and bring in some serious dough :D

I thought it was well known that bands like this could charge that much, especially in areas where there isn't a music scene.

Fair play to them.

Yeah Phil, I used to help out up Penygraig Labour, and they have bands there every Saturday and the going rate for a covers band is generally 700 - 1000.

It's been mentioned before. I think SBF and TDOHM joined forces for Melvana (Melvins/Nirvana covers), but I'm not sure if that's still going.

I've often wanted to start up an 80s rock/metal cover band, stuff like Crue, Skid Row, Guns'n'Roses, etc just for the money!

I'm sure I've bored you all silly with this story before, but my old band PD played with Agnostic Front in Birmingham in the mid 90's and got paid £50. On the way home from the gig we stopped at some services and pulled up alongside a Transit van containing a band who had just done the exact opposite. i.e. travelled from Birmingham to play Cardiff.

We got talking to them and they turned out to be a Madness covers band and had been paid £850 to play at The Claude.
Drugs come out of boredom, babe.
UN exports it everyday.
Their armies feed the ghetto lame.
Government approve it just the same.

Yeah, if doing a day job wasn't enough, spending my weekend in 'political' & rugby clubs for hours turding (sic) out 'chart hits' for their clientele, the only thing I'd spend my split of the money on would be a rope and a sturdy wall bracket.

Sure, but the reality is a covers band might make good bank once in a while, but not frequently enough to quit the day job :(

If it was doing stuff I liked (even like andi says, cheesey 80's metal) then of course it would be a laugh- however stereophonics were stipulated...

Yeah, I can't imagine it's much more soul-destroying than playing to only your mates on local shows for years and years, and self-releasing an EP that only your friends buy.

I don't care who your friends are. I always thought you were an asshole.

Nor was I.

But 4 gigs a month @ £500 each, £100 per person (if 5 piece) thats £400 towards new gear. And if you're getting that much money, have to make sure you got decent gear so you could easily justify the new LP Custom to our other half if you needed too.

Pretty sure Luke's response to that will be "I like bunk guitars".
